Cabinet photograph of Washakie standing in profile, holding his pipe authoritatively in the center of a group of Shoshone Indians, with Baker and Johnston, Evanston, WY imprint on verso. 

Washakie (ca 1804-1900), a Shoshone chief, was a lifelong friend to whites, assisting travelers and troops through his treacherous homeland terrain. In 1876, he joined forces with the military as both a scout and warrior and served under General George Crook pushing Crazy Horse into the Powder River Country. He was praised by President Grant and Arthur, and buried with full military honors.
